Check Fraud

Check washing is a growing form of fraud where criminals steal mailed checks, erase the ink, and rewrite them for large sums—draining your bank account before you even notice. To protect yourself, avoid sending checks through the mail and consider paying your taxes online instead. Electronic payments are faster, safer, and trackable, significantly reducing your risk of fraud. Take control of your financial security—ditch the check and go digital.

All In-Person Debit and Credit Card Transaction Fees

Prince William County’s Finance Department is transitioning to a new merchant servicer. Effective Monday, June 2, 2025, a service fee of 2.3% will be applied to all in-person debit and credit card transactions conducted at the Development Services Building and the Sudley Tax Administration locations. The payment processor charges this service fee to offset the cost of accepting card payments. Residents may continue to use alternative payment methods, such as cash or check, to avoid the fee.
