The Police Department has a new way to report parking complaints throughout Prince William County. Parking complaints are one of the most common complaints received by the Department and we ask residents for your patience as these matters are prioritized and addressed. More information on vehicles can be found on the Neighborhood Services website.
BEFORE CONTACTING THE POLICE DEPARTMENT REGARDING A PARKING ISSUE, IS THE VEHICLE BLOCKING TRAFFIC OR POSING A SAFETY ISSUE?
If your complaint involves a vehicle obstructing traffic or posing a safety risk to pedestrians or bicyclists, or involves vehicles parked in a manner obstructing a fire hydrant, fire lane, or marked handicapped space, please contact the non-emergency line by calling (703) 792-6500 so a patrol officer can respond. These complaints require immediate attention.
Other complaints, such as vehicles with expired inspection or registration, or those regarding illegally parked vehicles, abandoned vehicles, commercial vehicles that are illegally parked in residential areas, as well as boats, RVs, trailers and other large items that may be parked in violation of County laws, are considered lower priority and will be addressed as soon as possible.
In these cases, residents should contact the Parking Enforcement line by calling (703) 792-8536, or email. The parking enforcement line is not a monitored line, residents are asked to leave a brief description of the concern, including a vehicle description, and the specific location of where the vehicle is parked.
Parking Enforcement officers work varying shifts Monday through Friday during the day time hours, and occasionally on weekends. When the complaint is received, it will be assigned to the appropriate police district (western, central, or eastern) for review and action. Parking matters, such as those described as 'other complaints' above, are considered lower priority and may take a few days to address. As the Department has limited resources to look into these complaints, we ask for patience and understanding.
If you believe your vehicle was towed, please contact the Public Safety Communications Center by calling (703) 792-6500. You will need to provide your license plate information which should note which towing company towed your vehicle.
These notices are not tickets and do not carry a fine. This is simply a notice based on a complaint received or due to a safety issue involving a vehicle being parked along any public property. If you received this notice, your vehicle is either:
If you vehicle is not moved promptly, your vehicle may be ticketed and/or towed.
To contest a ticket, you must visit a police district station to receive a court date for the case to be heard in Prince William County General District Court. Based on availability, you may ask to speak to a supervisor at one of the locations if your citation was issued less than 30 calendar days and you are in compliance of the issued violation and can show proof of compliance. The supervisor at that time will have discretion to void the ticket.
Commercial vehicles are defined by County Code. In most cases, a commercial vehicle is determined by weight and must have a gross weight of 12,000+ pounds, not a vehicle that may only display commercial signage. Semi-trucks, trailers, dump trucks, and construction vehicles are often classified as commercial vehicles.
Watercraft, boat trailers, motor homes, and camping trailers fall under another County Code section with different restrictions.
