The last records request transaction will be accepted 30 minutes prior to close of business.
The Prince William County Police Records Section is pleased to announce that, starting Feb. 13, 2024, crash reports are available via the Carfax Crashdocs online portal. Crash reports remain free for community members and $3 for law offices or insurance companies.
If you received a case report number, visit the Crashdocs site. **Please allow 7-10 business days after the crash for the report to be ready.** Crash reports are only created in the event of extensive property damage or injury.
Crashdocs allows you to search for a crash report recorded within the Prince William County jurisdiction. Note: a case report is not created for vehicle crashes where there is no personal injury, minimal damage or if the crash occurred on private property.
If a case report was created, you will need the case report number, the last name of the involved party plus the date of the accident.
To request a copy of an investigative report, please visit our page regarding Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Requests for public records including body-camera footage, photos or evidence, police reports, and records or documents are considered a FOIA request.
In circumstances where an investigative report was not taken, your FOIA request was denied, or a copy of the report is not needed, you can request a verification report of the incident at no cost. Verification reports are similar to a receipt acknowledging police were called to the incident. These reports typically include the date, time, location, and incident number associated with the incident.
Insurance companies and attorneys are charged $4 for each verification.
A local Prince William County Criminal History Check, or "Background Check", can be performed for those who can prove their Prince William County residency and/or arrest. You must have two forms of proper identification one of which must be a photo ID showing your date of birth. The only acceptable forms of ID are a valid driver's license or a DMV-issued identification card, a valid passport, a valid Social Security card, a valid birth certificate or a valid military ID. The fee for this service is $6. The record check may take as long as 72 hours to complete.
The Prince William County Police Department does not provide copies of driving records. These records can only be obtained through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
