Warm Coats, Warm Hearts: A Community United by Generosity

Imagine facing the biting chill of winter without a coat. For countless families, this chilling scenario is their everyday reality, as a simple coat becomes an unattainable luxury. This year, WHUR 96.3 FM and the county's Community Services department have turned compassion into action, ensuring that more than 100 local children will brave the winter cold with warmth and comfort.

A New Tradition of Generosity

Each October, radio station WHUR hosts a Children's Coat Drive, aiming to collect brand-new coats for youth across the DMV region. This year marked a special occasion as WHUR extended its efforts to include Prince William Community Services, recognizing the community's needs and its listeners' presence in the area.

Broadcasting live, WHUR encouraged their listeners to donate new coats, hats and gloves. Their engagement and outreach resulted in a generous donation of 125 new coats to Community Services.

"This gesture fosters community and solidarity," says Acting Community Services Executive Director Georgia Bachman. "This kindness has lightened the load for these families, who often face overwhelming challenges. For them, the gift of warmth is one less worry—and a reminder that they are not alone."

Transforming Lives, One Coat at a Time

The impact of this drive goes beyond just keeping children warm. It instills hope and reinforces the support network that surrounds our community's most vulnerable members. For families already dealing with developmental delays, disabilities, or mental health challenges, receiving these donations was a beacon of hope during trying times.

One heartwarming story from the event highlights its lasting impact. A client from Community Services, who helped organize and distribute the coats, reminisced about receiving warm socks as a child during the winter. The memory of that simple act of kindness stayed with him, illustrating how these gestures can leave a lasting, positive impression on a child's life.

A Community Effort with Heart

The event also highlighted the collaborative spirit within the Community Services. Clients from the vocational rehabilitation program at the Phoenix Center played a vital role by organizing and distributing the coats. This integration gave them valuable skills while giving back to their community, illustrating a comprehensive approach to service that empowers and uplifts them.

This coat giveaway was more than just an act of charity—it was a celebration of community, showing how collective efforts can lead to meaningful change.
