PWCPD Spotlight: Crossing Guards, Service with Flexibility

single news

The mission of School Crossing Guards is to ensure the safe passage of our children as they walk to and from school, through comprehensive training of all crossing guards and a continuing commitment to safety and excellence. That’s the reason Crossing Guard Appreciation Day is observed each February.

The Police Department seeks qualified individuals interested in part-time work to become School Crossing Guards. Crossings occur between the hours of 7 a.m. to 9:20 a.m., and 2 p.m. to 4:20 p.m., Monday through Friday when schools are in session.

For siblings Isaiah and Grace Rodriguez, both college students, the opportunity to give back to their community – and the flexible working hours that suited their class schedules – made the decision to become Crossing Guards an easy one.

Isaiah was the first to join the team, and with the accommodating hours and sense of community he found, his sister Grace knew she wanted to be part of the team. Now they work different crossings at the same school and have time to take classes, study, and enjoy free time on the weekends!

Crossing Guard applicants must complete training sessions provided, be available to work morning and afternoon crossings, and meet these standards. Uniforms are provided.

Grace said her positive experiences with Crossing Guards when she attended a local middle school helped in her decision. “I remember crossing the street every morning and afternoon and feeling very safe. The Crossing Guards would always greet every child and parent, and I try to share that positivity with the families and children on my crossing today,” she said.

If you are a college student, or anyone looking for a satisfying part-time position, consider being a Crossing Guard. For more information on Crossing Guards – or to refer this career to a family member or friend – please visit the Police Department website.
