Prince William Public Libraries (PWPL) celebrated Earth Day by opening a new environmental education space, Central Green. This outdoor library space is the first of its kind for PWPL, utilizing the open space surrounding Central Library, and now offering a secure area for outdoor programming with a focus on hands-on environmental education.
Central Green is home to a weather station, a story trail about the clouds and rain, windmills, a pollinator garden, solar lights, and a composter.
PWPL believes in the importance of raising awareness about current issues. Central Green allows for exploration and interaction with nature, the outdoors, and conservation activities, provides hands-on learning opportunities, spreads the understanding of the importance of conservation, and enhances environmental stewardship.
Central Green will also enhance other library programming. Story times and book clubs can now be held outside. Patrons can use picnic tables and benches for studying and reading and enjoy the green space during programs.
“Central Green is a wonderful addition to Central Library, where generations of patrons will be able to enjoy the beautiful space, gather, and learn. We are extremely grateful to our donors and all who have made this project come to fruition,” said PWPL Deputy Director Rebecca Lowe.
This project was made possible thanks to the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, Environmental Fund and Dominion Energy, Environmental Education and Stewardship grant.
