The winter season brings beloved holidays, and there are never too many opportunities to breathe in the smell of ginger cookies, showcase your creativity with holiday ornaments, and cozy up and read a book.
Join Prince William Public Libraries for holiday fun, including creating holiday wreaths or a holiday cookie house, decorating sugar cookies, making gingerbread ornaments, and searching for hidden candy canes. Pick up winter-themed take and make craft kits to enjoy at home, or visit a library for collaborative seasonal crafts. PWPL will merge traditional with innovative when making 3D tiny winter cottages and 3D printed snowflakes and will celebrate nature when creating eco-friendly winter wonderlands. It isn’t easy to choose the highlight of all these holiday programs, but the annual Festival of Trees at Haymarket Gainesville Library is among the top picks. Find out more in the Online Events Calendar.
Are you thinking about trying a new winter sport this season or improving your skills at the sport you already enjoy? Or do you prefer to cozy up at home and read about cold-weather sports? Prince William Public Libraries has you covered either way. Search the online catalog or ask a librarian for suggestions.
Winter Reading is yet another popular program at PWPL. From December 1–February 28, read, write, listen, visit a library, search for Yeti, and tackle a monthly challenge. Then, sip a hot chocolate from a special mug and go ice skating, courtesy of Prince William Public Libraries.
Log in to Beanstack or sign up at your local library, complete 10 of PWPL special winter challenges and win a special mug with yummy hot cocoa. Everybody who completes 10 challenges will also receive a pass for ice skating. In addition, children will be entered into a special prize drawing.
If you feel that you need a little boost to get through the short days, check out a SAD Lamp. Shorter days during the winter mean less sunlight which can lead to decreased mood and energy levels and even to Seasonal Affective Disorder, or “SAD.” PWPL offer a popular remedy – a SAD lamp, a specialized light device that mimics sunlight. SAD lamps can be checked out, renewed, and put on hold. Search for “SAD Lamp” in the online catalog or check one out from your library.
