ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES (ENR) CLASSES
Virginia Cooperative Extension Horticulture classes are free (unless noted) and open to the public. Pre-registration is required for classes. GARDENING BASICS:
Beat the winter blues, join Virginia Cooperative Extension and Master Gardeners for the Gardening Basics Series via Zoom. Every month we’ll have a new topic, see the schedule below for dates/topics. All classes are 6:30pm – 7:30pm. A zoom link will be sent out to registrants the morning of the class.
Session III: March18, Soil & Turf. Do you know what's in your soil and how it affects your turf? Join Virginia Cooperative Extension, BEST Lawns Program Manager Trish Westenbroek to learn the principles of soil health, the importance of soil testing and how healthy soil leads to healthy turf. CLASSES AT THE LIBRARY: Virginia Cooperative Extension is partnering with Prince William County Libraries to offer “free” classes on a variety of topics, check out the following classes.
Let's Get Growing Series at Montclair Library: Virginia Cooperative Extension, Master Gardeners, and the Little Seed Library Coalition are partnering to bring a series of gardening classes designed to help the home gardener create a successful and bountiful garden. All classes will be held from 6:00pm to 7:00pm.

- April 21 - Apartment Sized Edible Gardens: Discover how to grow fresh herbs and vegetables even in small spaces. Learn simple techniques for container gardening and create a harvest right from your kitchen, balcony, patio, or windowsill.
- June 16 - Garden Pests & How to Beat Them: Learn to identify common insect problems that target your vegetables. Discover eco-friendly strategies to protect your plants and keep your harvest healthy all season long.
- September 22 - Harvest Smarter, Compost Better: We’ll explore simple tips for gathering your garden’s bounty at peak flavor and nutrition. Learn how to turn garden scraps into rich compost that feeds next season’s growth.
ATURDAY IN THE GARDEN (SIG) CLASSES: Begin April 11. All classes begin at 9:00 am, most classes last approximately 90 minutes. Check back for registration links.
- April 11 - Kids Planting Day. Kickoff spring with a fun, hands-on day for gardeners of all ages. Explore your gardening skills, vegetables and bring home a special plant.
- May 2 - Art in the Garden/Plant Sale. Back by popular demand! Explore the creativity of spring with the Prince William County Art Society. Try different art styles with guidance from local artists. Some supplies provided; feel free to bring your own.
- June 6 - Gardening for Wildlife. Discover how to create a welcoming haven where birds, bees, and beneficial insects can thrive and expand your garden into a lively ecosystem full of natural beauty.
- July 11 - Horticulture Therapy. Connect with nature through mindful gardening activities. Through sensory exploration, and gentle guidance designed to promote wellbeing, reduce stress, and nurture growth -both in the garden and within themselves.
- August 1 - Turf and Cover Crops. Join VCE Ag Agent Thomas Bolles who will share tips on using cover crops, followed by Environmental Educator Trish Westenbroek with tips on turf care.
- September 5 - Cultivating Mushrooms/Plant Sale. Discover the best techniques for growing mushrooms at home with Virginia Spores. Learn to create the perfect environment for your fungi to thrive!
- October 3 - Fall Family Day. Come and enjoy a day at the Garden, tour the gardens, fun crafts, talk to Master Gardeners who tend the garden, learn about composting and preparing your garden for the winter.
