Completed Road Bond Projects

The Prince William Department of Transportation undertakes road projects that have been approved by County voters as part of a road bond referendum. Voter approval allows the County to sell bonds in order to establish funding for projects. These projects are suggested by citizens, Board of County Supervisors, police or staff to help improve road safety and traffic congestion issues. The following projects have been completed through this process.

1998 COUNTY ROAD BOND PROJECTS

Wellington Road
$9,783,821.48

Wellington Road was widened from just west of the Nissan Pavilion and connected to improvements at Virginia Gateway. The project included the realignment and signalized timing of the Wellington Road, Devlin Road and Balls Ford Road Intersections. Wellington Road now connects to the future East/West Connector.

Spriggs Road Phase I
$19,370,967.49

The Spriggs Road Improvement Project-Phase I included widening and improving the existing two (2) lane facility to a four (4)lane divided roadway with five (5) foot concrete sidewalk and eight (8) foot asphalt trail divided roadway between Minnieville Road (Route 640) and Dumfries Road (Route 234). The project included improving the current alignment by removing sharp curves and moving its intersection with Route 234 west of its current location. The project also included the improvement and flattening of the curve on Minnieville Road south of Spriggs Road.

Spriggs Road Phase II
$24,712,618.35

The Spriggs Road Improvement Project - Phase II will included widening and improving the existing two (2) lane facility to a four (4) lane divided roadway with five (5) foot concrete sidewalk and eight (8) foot asphalt trail between Hoadly Road (Route 624) to 1500 feet north of Minnieville Road (Route 640). The project will included improving the current alignment by removing sharp curves and installing traffic signals along Spriggs Road at the following intersections: Hoadly Road Saunders Middle School and Hylton High School.

Prince William Parkway Extension
$12,493,351.68

Prince Parkway was extended to U.S. Route 1 allowing direct access to and from Route 1 to Prince William Parkway.

Linton Hall Road
$39,234,832.67

A new four-lane facility between Sudley Manor Drive and Route 28. The project included a bridge expansion over the Broad Run. This project was awarded under a Public Private Transportation Act (PPTA) contract.

2002 ROAD BOND PROJECTS

Benita Fitzgerald Drive
$4,065,228.20

The new 1083 linear feet four-lane divided facility was extended from the existing terminus of Benita Fitzgerald Drive to an intersection with Cardinal Drive. The project included the construction of dual left lanes and right lanes at Cardinal Drive.

Sudley Manor Drive Phase I and II
$36,144,996.67

This four-lane divided facility extended Sudley Manor Drive for approximately 11000 linear feet from Chatsworth Drive on a southwestern direction over the Norfolk Southern Railroad and intersection at grade with Route 234 Bypass and connecting with Sudley Manor Drive in the vicinity of Linton Hall Road. The project also included widening sections of Linton Hall Road.

Prince William Parkway Intersection with Minnieville Road
$2,240,836.09

The project improved the intersection by adding extra lanes to create triple left turn lanes from the Parkway to Minnieville Road. These and other improvements helped expedite traffic and increased safety at this busy intersection.

Prince William Parkway Intersection with Old Bridge Road
$2,807,146.43

The project improved the intersection by constructing addition lanes and improving the curve of the existing free flow lane.

Minnieville Road East (Caton Hill to Old Bridge)
$27,570,906.49

Widening a total of 10512 linear feet of Minnieville Road to a four-lane divided facility from Caton Hill Road to Old Bridge Road. The project also included the improvement and expansion of the existing Tackett's Mill Park and Ride facility.

Minnieville Road West (Cardinal Drive to Spriggs Road)
$12,292,056.82

This project provided a four-lane divided facility with a raised median that widened approximately 6,709 linear feet of Minnieville Road from Cardinal Drive to its intersection with Spriggs Road.

2006 ROAD BOND PROJECTS

Prince William Parkway (Hoadly Road to Old Bridge Road) ARRA Project
$10,435,037.80

Widening of Prince William Parkway to a six-lane divided roadway with curb and pedestrian facilities from Old Bridge Road to Hoadly Road. The improvements took advantage of the existing six-lane section and introduced right-turn lanes where necessary and possible.

Route 1 Joplin Road to Bradys Hill Road)
$67,559,706.45

This project consisted of the design of improvements for a section of Route 1 between Joplin/Fuller Road and Bradys Hill Road from its existing configuration of four-lane roadway to a six-lane divided facility.

Glenkirk Road Sidewalk
$545,759.69

The Glenkirk Road Sidewalk project involves the construction of approximately 1,300 feet of sidewalk primarily within existing right-of-ways and existing utility easements along the western side of Glenkirk Road. The facility will connect to an existing 10-foot shared use path on Linton Hall Road, and existing sidewalks on Sterling Point Drive and at the southern terminus of the project on Glenkirk Road.

Hoadly Road Trail (Spriggs Road to Dale Boulevard)
$663,760.58

This project includes the design and construction of an asphalt trail for a distance approximately 0.4 miles on Hoadly Road between Spriggs Road and Dale Boulevard.

Panther Pride Drive Sidewalk
$272,955.44

The Panther Pride Drive Sidewalk Project involves the design and construction of a sidewalk and pedestrian facilities along Route 1 at Panther Pride Drive.

Old Bridge Road Pedestrian Improvements (Mohican Road to Dillingham Square)
$2,044,836.49

The Old Bridge Road Pedestrian Improvement Project will provide the full design and construction of a pedestrian facility, approximately 3,650 feet along the northern side of Old Bridge Road (Route 641). This project will fill in areas and improve continuity, connectivity, and linkages between schools, subdivision and commercial developments along the thoroughfare. The approximate limits of the project are between the intersections of Dillingham Square/ Cricket Lane and the intersection of Mohican Road.

Piper Lane Improvement Project
$1,963,834.63

The Piper Lane Improvement Project is part of the Prince William County Broad Run Commuter Lot Project, which includes the design and construction of additional commuter parking spaces at the Broad Run Commuter Lot. This phase of the project includes the widening of the northbound approach of Piper Lane (Rte. 660) at the intersection of Nokesville Road (Rte. 28) and Piper Lane to provide additional channelization lanes, improve traffic level of service (LOS) and/or traffic capacity to the intersection.

Rollins Ford Road

The Rollins Ford Road Improvement Project consists of the widening of Rollins Ford Road to a four-lane divided roadway from Vint Hill Road to the intersection of Song Sparrow Drive and Yellow Hammer Drive. This project also includes the construction of two 365' bridges spanning Broad Run, the construction of northbound lanes on Rollins Ford Road from Yellow Hammer Drive to Estate Manor Drive, the widening and reconstruction of a section of Vint Hill Road, and site preparation at the future site of the Rollins Ford Community Park.

Smoketown Road Sidewalk
$46,100.25

This project involves the design and construction of 230 feet of new sidewalk on Smoketown Road, north from the intersection of Nazarene Way to connect with the existing sidewalk. The project will also include utility relocation, environmental mitigation, and right-of-way acquisition.

University Boulevard Design- Build
$22,721,476.67

This project involves several elements including the construction of a four lane divided section of University Boulevard from Sudley Manor Drive to Hornbaker Road (which was part of the 2006 Road Bond Referendum), and the widening of the existing University Boulevard to a six lane divided roadway from Hornbaker Road to the Route 234 Bypass. Also part of this project, is the widening of Hornbaker Road from north of University Boulevard to Thomason Barn Road to a four lane roadway.

Gideon Sidewalk Project
$3,630,976.00

The Gideon Drive sidewalk project will provide pedestrian continuity along Gideon Drive by constructing several proposed sections of five foot wide concrete sidewalk. The new sections of sidewalk will link with existing sections along the northbound side of Gideon Drive. The project anticipates the use of retaining walls, a segment of guardrail, and curb and gutter to minimize impacts to adjacent properties.

Hellwig Park Entrance This proposed improvements include the relocation of the existing driveway entrance of Hellwig Park and the addition of 100-120 parking spaces within the park's property adjacent to soccer fields. The frontage improvement will relocate the existing entrance to an approximate distance of 120' to the east and across Independent Hill Drive approach. The improvement will also require some utility relocations, house demolition, bio-retention basin and possible pavement marking changes along Bristow Road.

Logmill Road This project involves reconstructing a portion of Logmill Road just west of Hickory Grove, beginning 1,200 feet west of Parnell Court and ending 200 feet east of Meander Creek Lane. The proposed project will increase the existing sight distance by improving the vertical geometry of the roadway, meeting AASHTO standards. The purpose of the project is to improve the safety of this section of Logmill Road.

Logmill Road Exhibits:

Route 1- Neabsco Mills to Featherstone This project widens Route 1 north to a six-lane roadway from Neabsco Mills Road to Featherstone Road. Improvements will also be made at the intersections of Neabsco Mills Road and Dale Boulevard with Route 1. The new roadway will feature a 16 foot wide raised median with curb and gutter, on-road bike lanes, a pedestrian sidewalk, and asphalt trail.

Route 1-Route 234 Turn Lane This project was identified by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for construction of a second left turn lane on Route 1 North at its intersection with Route 234. This will improve flow of Route 1 traffic into the Route 1/Route 234 Commuter Lot.

Blackburn Road Sidewalk

This project involves the design and construction of 500 feet of new sidewalk on Blackburn Road from Rippon Boulevard to the Cow Branch Bridge to connect existing sidewalks for better pedestrian access. The project will also include utility relocation, environmental mitigation, and right-of-way acquisition.

Prince William Parkway Extension This 2006 Road Bond Referendum project widens Prince William Parkway to a six-lane divided roadway with a raised median from Old Bridge Road to Minnieville Road. Improvements will also be made at the intersection of Prince William Parkway and Hillendale Drive.

Antietam Road
$1,126,683 The Antietam Road Sidewalk is a Safe Routes to School project benefitting students walking to Antietam Elementary School. The project involves the design and construction of sidewalks and crosswalks along Antietam Road from Old Bridge Road to Woodfern Court.

Blackburn Road Sidewalk

This project will provide a sidewalk, parking structure, and trail along Blackburn Road.

Purcell Road

ÂThis project involves the improvement and widening of a section of Purcell Road from the intersection with Route 234 to west of the Purcell Branch crossing near Vista Brooke Drive to include the construction of a realigned two-lane road, improvements at the intersection of Purcell Road and Route 234, and improving an existing sharp curve on Purcell Road.
