On Dec. 15, 2020, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors unanimously approved changes to Chapter 22 (Refuse) of the County Code. The key change is the mandatory separation and collection of yard waste. Curbside yard waste collection is seasonal and will run from March through December.
As of October 2021, residents, businesses, and landscapers in Prince William County are required to separate yard waste from the regular trash for disposal. For curbside collection, yard waste must be placed in compostable paper yard waste bags or loose in a personal container labeled "Yard Waste."
Labels are available at the Prince William County Landfill and the County Compost Facility; however, self-made labels are also acceptable.
Yard waste is composted at the County's newly expanded compost facility instead of buried in the County Landfill. Yard waste material brought to solid waste facilities must be in yard waste paper bags or emptied loose in a yard waste designated area.
YARD WASTE IS NO LONGER ACCEPTED IN PLASTIC BAGS.
WHAT IS YARD WASTE?
Yard Waste is any form of organic matter found outside the home, such as leaves, plants, flowers, grass clippings, wood chips, and trimmings from shrubs and trees. During the first two full weeks of January, Christmas Trees are also considered Yard Waste. However, root balls, stumps, trees, or branches exceeding 24 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length ARE NOT a part of the curbside collection program. Visit the A to Z Disposal Guide for alternatives.
Yard Waste preparation sheet is available in English and Spanish.
