A substance use disorder is a medical condition resulting from recurrent use of drugs and/or alcohol that causes significant impairment (including health problems, disability and failure to meet major responsibilities at work, school or home). The disorder may result in an array of mental, physical and behavioral issues, which negatively impacts individuals' social, financial or professional lives.
There are many types of substances that people can become addicted to - such as tobacco, alcohol, illicit drugs and prescription drugs - leading to substance use disorders. One of the most prevalent right now is opioids, which has seen a rapid increase in overdoses and deaths caused by the drugs.
Opioids are a class of highly addictive drugs used to reduce pain by producing a euphoric effect. Opioids include commonly prescribed painkillers such as oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), and codeine. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid up to 100 times more potent than morphine, and heroin, an illegal drug, are other forms of dangerous, addictive opioids that are prevalent in the current opioid epidemic.
Due to opioids’ addictive nature, continued use can result in addiction and overdose if not managed very carefully.
