Mental Health-Open Hands

The Behavioral Health & Wellness team strives to prevent suicides and addiction while encouraging social and emotional well-being for all residents in the Greater Prince William area. Our data-driven, comprehensive strategies build individual and community capacity through education, outreach, and training about mental health and addiction-related topics. We work collaboratively with community partners through the Prevention Coalition of Greater Prince William and the Trauma-Informed Community Network. Our team provides training and initiatives to address substance use and mental health topics such as cannabis, alcohol, opioids, gambling, suicide prevention, and more. We also provide preventative lifesaving tools like Mental Health First Aid and training on trauma, medication disposal bags and lockboxes, firearm locks through our Lock & Talk initiative, and no-cost Narcan nasal spray with our REVIVE! program.  A schedule of the trainings and events can be found by clicking here.

Beginning July 16, 2022, dialing “988” will route calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. In 2020, Congress designated 988 as a new three-digit dialing, texting, and chat code for direct connection to support for anyone experiencing substance use issues, a suicidal crisis, or mental health-related distress.
988’s implementation will strengthen and expand the current lifeline call-center infrastructure and capacity to ensure that trained crisis counselors are available via call, text, and chat. A long-term goal of 988 is building a robust nationwide crisis response system that links callers to community-based providers that can deliver a full range of crisis care services (e.g., mobile crisis teams or stabilization centers) if needed.

  • The Federal 988 legislation requires all telecommunication providers to activate 988 by no later than 7/16/22; much like 911, this becomes a widely recognized, easy-to-remember number by which to connect with already-existing and –operating National Suicide Prevention Lifelines (NSPLs) around the country.  The current NSPL number ( 800-273-TALK), will continue as the 988 National number is rolled out.
  • Presently 988 routes calls based on the caller’s area code and not their location in the community.  Local numbers like Prince William CS Emergency Services for emergency mental health intervention (703/792-7800 Manassas, or 703 792-4900 Woodbridge), Community Regional Crisis Response for youth and adults in need of mobile crisis 844-627-4747 or REACH mobile crisis services for youth and adults with developmental disabilities 855/897-8278 can still be accessed directly.
