New Horizons School-Based Services
New Horizons School-Based Services provides a comprehensive range of evidence-based and trauma informed prevention, motivational treatment, early intervention, and outpatient therapeutic services. Services are provided to youth at risk of or having a mental health, substance use and co-occurring disorder and related issues (i.e., bullying, anger management, relationships, physical and sexual abuse, communication, school problems, peer pressure, family problems). These services may be provided on site at public high schools in Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park or offered at our Community Services clinic. If it is determined that family therapy is needed, families are offered to be seen in our clinic setting where evening hours may be preferred.
Services may include:
- Prevention and outpatient services to include individual and group therapy at the public high school setting
- Comprehensive assessments and diagnoses to determine the needs, strengths and preferences of clients
- Development of treatment goals and plans in collaboration with clients
- Crisis intervention for crises occurring in school related to mental health, substance use and co-occurring issues
- Education and skills development to build successful problem solving, teamwork and positive communication
- Education and support groups for students at high-risk for or with substance use, mental health issues or co-occurring disorder issues
- Presentations and trainings on substance use, mental health issues, co-occurring disorders and related topics for students, parents, school staff and other professionals
- Link students and parents to community resources
- Identify needed services and refer students in need of longer-term or family therapy to NH Clinic-Based or other clinic-based treatment programs. Those students in need of more intensive services will be referred to a higher level of care (i.e., intensive in-home therapy, therapeutic day treatment, residential treatment, psychiatric hospitalization)
- Collaborate and consult with school staff and other professionals on substance use, mental health issues, co-occurring disorders and other related issues
- Participate in school discharge planning for students returning from residential treatment centers and psychiatric hospitalizations to identify supports in the school and community that will facilitate successful school reentry
