An outdoor living space is a bonus for all homeowners and their home's value. However, knowing where to start and how to begin an outdoor home improvement project, such as how to build a deck, can be challenging and daunting. There is no substitute for good plans to make applying for a building permit easy.
To help simplify the process, Prince William County's Residential Deck Guide helps to take the complexity out of the process.
"By using the Residential Deck Guide, customers can be assured of a safe structure that is consistent and code compliant, which accommodates a new space for outdoor enjoyment, relaxing and entertaining," shared Mandi Spina, Acting Director, Department of Development Services.
The typical plan details apply to residential, single-level open decks and ensure the safe design and construction of decks while creatively incorporating flexibility and durability. These guides are based on the prescriptive requirements of the Virginia Residential Code, industry best practices and applicable referenced standards such as the National Design Specification for Wood Construction. Some restrictions may apply.
