The new 680-foot asphalt sidewalk on Old Carolina Road connects the section of sidewalk that was missing on the east side of Old Carolina Road from the existing asphalt trail, north of Somerset Crossing Drive, to the existing asphalt trail within the Somerset Crossing subdivision.
“I am thrilled to have been able to see the completion of this vital infrastructure project for our community,” said Prince William County Chair At-Large Ann Wheeler. “The addition of the sidewalk on Old Carolina Road, with guardrails, drainage ditches, and drainage inlets, represents a significant step forward in enhancing pedestrian access, safety, and connectivity in this corridor. This project underscores our commitment to creating a safer and more accessible environment for our residents, making our county an even better place to live, work and play.”
The $1.1-million project received funding through a Transportation Alternatives Program grant, the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Regional Surface Transportation Funds and a local match from Brentsville District Supervisor Jeanine Lawson’s office.
“I am happy to see the long-awaited completion of the Old Carolina sidewalk,” said Lawson. “This was a project that we started working on in 2017. Engineering, as well as funding hurdles, slowed down the process, but I am pleased that we have finally been able to give residents a safe connection to their community trails.”
