June is Great Outdoors Month, the perfect time to explore the great outdoors and enjoy some fresh air and all that nature has to offer. When it comes to outdoor programs and activities, Prince William County Parks and Recreation has you covered. With 5,000 acres of parkland, 15 historic sites and 60 miles of trail there is so much to do and enjoy outside. Below are some upcoming programs and activities you can do outdoors this month and some year-round.
Learn About the Wildlife in Our Parks
Join Master Naturalist Candice Lowther at Lake Ridge Park for our Virginia Bird Calls program. She’ll discuss some of the amazing birds that call Virginia home. You’ll also learn some of the familiar bird calls while you stroll through the beautiful park. Bring your binoculars and camera, you don’t want to miss a thing! Register here to join us on Saturday, June 22, 8 am – 10 am.
Go Fishing
Sponsored by the Bass Federation, children of all ages are welcome at our upcoming fishing derby on Saturday, June 22, 7:30 am – 11:30 am at Locust Shade Park. Prizes, bait and equipment will be provided. Come out and enjoy a great morning of fishing with us! All ages welcome. Event is free. Sign up today. For more information, please call 703-792-8780.
If you can’t make it to the fishing derby, there are a total of three locations within the Prince William County Parks system where you can enjoy a day of fishing and expect to catch channel catfish, largemouth bass, crappie or bluegill. As a reminder, a fishing license is required for ages 16 and older.
Work Out Outside
Join us at Neabsco Creek Boardwalk on International Yoga Day, Friday, June 21, 8 pm- 9:30 pm, for a fun and creative full moon yoga flow practice. Please bring a yoga mat, blanket and water. Wear appropriate clothing. *30 minute walk from the parking lot pavilion to the south deck of the boardwalk, please arrive early. Ages 14+. Sign up here. Neabsco Regional Park also offers several outdoor workout stations that are free to use.
Locust Shade Park, located in Triangle, features our Warrior Challenge Course, an obstacle course built to mimic obstacles similar to those on the American Ninja Warrior TV show. Created in partnership between the Department of Defense and Prince William County, visitors of all ages can expect to test their strength and endurance all while having a blast traversing the many obstacles along the way. More than 20,000 square feet of obstacles awaits athletes of all levels along with a mini version of the course nearby for children 2 years old and up.
Go for a Hike
Another great way to get in a workout outdoors is to simply go for a walk or hike. Whether you’re looking to go on a short walk or get a more advanced hike in, we’ve got so many beautiful parks and trails for you to enjoy. You can find some of our hiking recommendations here, here and here. To locate a specific trail or learn about all of our trails, use our PWC Recreation Mapper to view information on all of our parks, trails and amenities.
Enjoy a Day on the Water
If you’re looking for a place the whole family can enjoy, then you’ll want to check out the beautiful Lake Ridge Park & Marina and its many amenities.
Located directly on the Occoquan Reservoir in the Lake Ridge community, this 74-acre park maintains unencumbered public access to the Occoquan Water Trail with breathtaking views. The Lake Ridge Park Marina offers three-season boat rentals, with a universal access boat launch and dock access. Canoes, pedal boats, kayaks, SUP and jon boats are available for rent. For land recreation, park visitors will enjoy playground areas, horseshoe pits and nature trails. The park also has picnic tables, grills and pavilions that you can rent.
Check out our other locations where you can spend the day on the water, either kayaking, pedal boating or canoeing. Rental options vary at each location but you can always bring your own (non-motorized only, such as jon boats, canoes and kayaks). View all the details here.
Play in a Park
From Lake Ridge to Haymarket – we’ve got playtime covered with our parks and playgrounds across Prince William County for both you and your little ones to explore, enjoy and play outdoors!
For a unique new playground the little ones will enjoy, you may want to check out our newest park in Nokesville—Rollins Ford Park. Located off Vint Hill Road, Rollins Ford features a custom farm-themed destination playground, a basketball court, three dog parks, two picnic pavilions, grass fields (for soccer and lacrosse), a comfort station, walking trails and a water bottle filling station along with water fountains.
Over the past year we've also made updates and improvements to several community parks and/or playgrounds, including Cloverdale Park, Birchdale Community Center, Brittany Neighborhood Park, Anne Moncure Wall Park, and Marumsco Acre Lake Park.
Last summer we also celebrated the opening of a new disc golf course in partnership with NOVA Disc Golf Association. The 18-hole course, lauded to be "the best woods course" in the area and perhaps the Mid-Atlantic, is located at Forest Greens Golf Club in Triangle.
Harbor Drive Wellness Park, located off Minnieville Road in Lake Ridge, is the first dedicated wellness park in the County's Occoquan District with universal fitness equipment accessible to people of all ages and physical abilities. The park is situated on 2.5 beautiful acres and includes the county's first fully accessible playground, meadows, a pollinator garden, and a looped walking trail. The park, converted from an underutilized community parking lot, is connected to Kaiser Permanente's new medical campus off Caton Hill Road via a one mile shared-use path.
Our Prince William County Recreation Mapper is a great resource with information on all our parks and their amenities. Be sure to bookmark it for later!
