The theme for Earth Day 2022 is “Invest in Our Planet” which calls on corporations, governments and people in general to take steps to help prevent further climate change.

The First Earth Day was observed on April 22, 1970 after Sen. Gaylord Nelson and San Francisco activist John McConnell asked people to go out and demonstrate against toxic drinking water, harmful pesticides and air pollution. Roughly 20 million Americans showed up which was about 10 percent of the population at the time, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

President Richard Nixon created the Environmental Protection on Dec. 2 1970. The Clean Air Act, the Endangered Species Act and revisions to the Clean Water Act followed.

This year marks the 52nd Earth Day.

Many groups across the country commemorate Earth Day by organizing local cleanups. Other plant trees. Earth Day can also be a time for people to enjoy nature, according to almanac.com.

Other ways to celebrate Earth Day include  planting pollinator gardens to attract butterflies, insects and hummingbirds, visiting local parks to pick up plastic, planting wildflowers and native plants, which also helps local pollinators, throwing out pesticides or planting a vegetable a garden , according to almanac.com.
