On Jan. 21, 2025, the Board of County Supervisors voted to designate Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025, as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Prince William County.
Each year, Crossing Guard Appreciation Day offers County residents a way to let the highly dedicated school crossing guards – who are in the street protecting our children every school day – know that they are appreciated, and that their work to make our County a safe place to live, work and play is appreciated.
In the 60-year history of the Crossing Guards, there have been no deaths or serious injuries of any child at any school crossing. In the past school year, Crossing Guards conducted 26,550 safe crossings, representing 6,642 school children every day at the county’s public elementary and middle schools.
“I am proud of the men and women who are out in all kinds of weather controlling heavily traveled school crossings,” said Lieutenant Michelle A. Wheeler, manager of the Police Department’s Crossing Guard Unit. “The safety of every student walking to and from school is their highest priority.”
These highly qualified individuals are fully prepared, by temperament and training, to meet the challenges of protecting our school children and teaching them the importance of pedestrian safety.
Crossing Guards provide an invaluable service to our community – sometimes under adversarial, dangerous or hostile conditions – in the performance of their duties. There are 62 school crossing guards working 71 crossings at 47 schools in Prince William County.
