Today, Prince William County leaders, staff and members of the Lake Ridge community came together to celebrate the officially opening of the Occoquan Greenway Hedges Run Segment 3 Bridge that was installed earlier this summer. The new bridge, for both pedestrians and bicyclists, is an upgrade to an existing trail, leased for public access from Lake Ridge Parks and Recreation Association, in the Lake Ridge community near the Occoquan Reservoir. The bridge and associated trail reroute replaces three splash-through creek crossings with a single elevated pedestrian/bicycle route.
“This project is part of a much larger vision that we have for the county of being truly connected by our nature trails, our blueways, and our greenways and our other natural areas throughout the county,” said Occoquan District Supervisor, Kenny A. Boddye.
“The reason why this is such a great project—the Greenway and also this bridge, is it shows a true partnership between us as County Government and the community. The Lake Ridge community has been at the forefront of driving this project for decades," added Boddye.
The Occoquan Greenway links the County Government Complex to the Town of Occoquan using a mix of paved and natural surface trails. Trail users can expect varied terrain with views of the Occoquan Reservoir as well as water access. Leashed pets are welcome on the Greenway and visitors are reminded to bring their own pet waste bags.
You can find the bridge in the section of the Occoquan Greenway located between Hedges Run Drive and Mohican Road. For the best trail experience, visitors should park at the Lake Ridge Marina trailhead and walk on the natural surface trail and on-street segments to Antietam Elementary School.
