Prince William County Added to VDACS Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine

single news

On July 8, 2022, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) added Prince William to the list of counties under quarantine for spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula (SLF). This also includes Manassas and Manassas Park.

All businesses in the quarantined area are required to obtain a permit from VDACS and inspect all regulated articles to ensure that they do not include any life stage of the insect before the articles are transported.

All residents and visitors to the quarantined area are also required to inspect regulated articles before transporting them outside of the quarantined area. Residents and visitors are not required to get a permit.

Regulated articles include essentially anything that has been outside. Examples include construction material, landscaping material, plant parts, waste material, outdoor household items, and all vehicles.

There is no fee for the permit, but there is a $6 fee for the required online training course. This is a Train the Trainer program, which requires one company representative to complete the online course to receive the permit. This trained staff member will train other staff as inspectors. The permit application and online training are available at vdacs.virginia.gov/plant-industry-services-spotted-lanternfly.shtml.

The PWC Mosquito and Forest Pest Management Branch is monitoring SLF across the County, working with partners at Virginia Cooperative Extension and VACS to mitigate the spread of this pest.
