Our fall issue of Leisure is now available! The current issue covers programs and activities from September to December, making it the perfect guide to help you plan all those fun fall activities.

From adapted recreation programs, to dance, fitness, outdoor fun and more, there’s plenty of activities to keep everyone in your family active and engaged this fall. Below is just a glance at some of our offerings. Be sure to view the full issue of Leisure for even more fall fun!

Adapted Recreation

In our adapted Fall Soccer Skills and Drills program for children with disabilities, participants will learn soccer fundamentals, have fun and get exercise. The class will be structured to provide individual and group instruction in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Higher staff to participant ratios, accessible field access and skill stations make this program accessible. Classes will be held at Hellwig Memorial Park, on Fridays from 9/13 – 10/4, 5:30-6:30 pm. Mark your calendars for some Holiday Cookie Decorating fun in December! Register your child (ages 4-10) for a fun-filled night. Come prepared to get a little messy as we decorate cookies and drink hot cocoa. Food allergies may be able to be accommodated; please contact ADA Coordinator Veronica Laughman at [email protected]. We hope you’ll join us on Wednesday, December 11, 6-7 pm at Birchdale Recreation Center.

Children’s Programs

Who doesn’t love a food truck or a good charcuterie board? 

Children ages 8-10 can register for this My First Food Truck program. Participants select a food truck theme, design menus, estimate expenses, determine prices and develop financial projections. Develop a business plan with a marketing strategy, capital-raising needs and more. This unique program offers a tasty way to develop business savvy! Program held at Pat White Center at Ben Lomond on Saturdays, 9/21-11/16, 11 am – 12 pm. (No class on 10/19.)

Older kids (ages 12-15) will enjoy our charcuterie board making class. This engaging and interactive class is perfect for teens who love to explore new flavors and enjoy creating stunning food displays. Your child will learn the art of assembling a charcuterie board, from selecting the perfect cheeses, meats, fresh fruits and breads. They will learn how to balance flavors and textures, creating beautiful presentations. Class take place on Tuesday, December 17, 6-7:30 pm at Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center. Dance

We offer dance classes for preschoolers all the way to adults, from ballet to tap, jazz and lyrical. Voted “Best Dance Studio” this year by InsideNova readers in their 11th annual Best of Prince William contest our programs at the Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center Dance Academy have become very popular. Dance Coordinator, Michelle Geoghegan, who runs the dance program was also voted Best Dance Instructor/Choreographer in the online contest. See all of our dance class offerings here

Fitness

At Chinn Aquatics & Fitness Center you can experience our Fit Labs this October. These are specialized workshops designed for all fitness levels. (Ages 14+)

Fit Lab-Wall Pilates: Pilates is the fastest growing trend in fitness. Breathe, move, and recover with the expert guidance of a Certified Personal Trainer in this low-impact, total-body workout. Sign up today for this workshop on October 1, 6:30-7:30 pm.

Fit Lab-Kettlebell: Get swinging the right way and master kettlebell techniques for a full-body, functional workout. Kettlebells incorporate strength, power, and cardio. a challenging workout for all fitness levels. Register here. Workshop held on October 8, 6:30-7:30 pm.

Fit Lab-Foam Rolling for Fitness: Foam rolling is not just for stretching! Join our Certified Personal Trainer to learn how to alleviate soreness, reduce inflammation, prevent injury and repair muscle with this type of self-massage. We provide the foam rollers, or you can bring your own. This Fit Lab is appropriate for all fitness levels. Workshop held on October 15, 6:30-7:30 pm. Register today.

In November, you can experience our Youth Core Four Fitness Program at Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center.  

In our core four series strength-training program we will educate participants on the proper mechanics, joint functionality and lifting techniques to help improve strength and functional health. There are four themed sessions: squats, shoulders, chest and back. Each session will focus on proper form and technique. Join us Sundays in November, 11 am- 12 noon. Four sessions for one fee. Historic Preservation

Join us on Saturday, October 12, from 7-9 pm for Bristoe Station Luminary, an event where you can tour Bristoe Station Battlefield at night and see nearly 1,000 luminary candles placed for the soldiers who died at Bristoe Station during the Civil War. All ages are welcome at this FREE event.

Who’s ready for some ghost stories by the campfire? Ben Lomond has a diverse and grim history as a Civil War hospital, a farm and a private home. Over the years, many local residents have claimed to see ghosts and other spooky happenings at the site. Is Ben Lomond haunted or not? Join us for an eerie evening around the campfire to hear some of the ghost stories associated with the historic site. Bring your own chair and flashlight. Children 6 and under are free. $5 fee, all others. Friday, October 25, 7:30- 9 pm at Ben Lomond Historic Site. Learn more and purchase tickets here.

Nature/Outdoors

Young ones (ages 4-8) will love our Creek Critters program. Your budding biologist will love exploring a slow-moving stream and catching some of the critters (macroinvertebrates) that call it home. This exciting, hands-on program includes the use of nets, terrariums and a classification chart to learn about the creek critters they find. Register here. Class takes place at Lake Ridge Park, Saturday, September 7, 10-11:30 am.

Come experience the beautiful Neabsco Creek Boardwalk at night! During this stargazing event on Saturday, November 16, 7-9 pm, you will turn your eyes skyward and enjoy the spectacular night sky from the Boardwalk. Start the evening with a hot chocolate around a warm firepit, followed by a stroll along the boardwalk where instructors will show you constellations, nebulas, planets, and other night sky favorites with the use of telescopes and astronomy binoculars. This is one winter program you won’t want to miss. Kids 4 and under FREE; $12 all others. Secure your spot today!
