Amarjit S. Riat, assistant director of planning & project management for Prince William County Department of Parks and Recreation was recently elected as Chairman of the Virginia Waste Management Board, a part of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. The Board has seven members appointed by the Governor of Virginia for a four-year term.
The Waste Management Board is responsible for carrying out the purposes and provisions of the Virginia Waste Management Act and compatible federal provisions.
The Board has general supervision and control over waste management activities in the Commonwealth of Virginia and primarily considers the adoption, amendment or repeal of regulations at board meetings. DEQ has permitting authority and administers day-to-day activities of waste programs.
Riat was elected Chairman of the Board on October 23, 2024, unanimously. He has been a member of the Board for the past 12 years. He served as President of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Virginia Chapter for two years (2008-2010). He retired as Deputy Director, Solid Waste Management Program for Fairfax County, Virginia in 2012 after 28 years of service. Riat is a licensed professional engineer in Virginia, Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Parks and Recreational Professional. He was the recipient of several outstanding awards and team excellence awards during his time with Fairfax County and continues to bring his excellence to Prince William County.
