Locust Shade Park is the perfect place to go if you are looking for a variety of great amenities with a beautiful, scenic backdrop with picturesque trails. Amenities include eight pavilions (available to rent), three playgrounds, horseshoe pits, three tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, 3.2 miles of scenic nature trails, a 15-station fitness trail, a mountain bike trail, batting cages, a driving range and an 18-hole miniature golf course, along with boating and fishing in an eight-acre pond. The park is also home to the Jean C. Smith Amphitheater, an outdoor performance venue that presents family entertainment during the summer season and our popular Warrior Challenge Course built to mimic obstacles similar to those on the American Ninja Warrior TV show.

Know Before You Go
- Jean C. Smith Amphitheater: The amphitheater presents family entertainment during the late spring and summer months, with bench seating that is protected by a colorful shade structure. Additional seating is available on the grass area. Picnic-style foods and soft beverages are permitted in the amphitheater area (no alcoholic beverages allowed).
- Fishing: Bank and pier fishing is available year-round during park operating hours, weather permitting. Locust Shade’s eight-acre pond is stocked with trout and channel catfish. There are also native populations of blue gill, largemouth bass and crappie. Pier is ADA accessible. Please note that for ages 16+ a Freshwater Virginia State Fishing License is required year-round and a Virginia State Trout License is required during our winter season, November 1 – April 30. - Boating: Pedal boats and canoes are available on weekends and holidays only from 12 pm – 6 pm, May through September, weather permitting. Please note last call for rentals is one hour prior to closing. Click here for rates and more information.

- Mountain Biking: There are nearly seven miles of mountain bike trails at Locust Shade Park are suitable for beginners to more advanced riders. The trail officially opened in winter 2021 thanks to community partners, the Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts (MORE), whose volunteers logged over 1,000 hours working to clear deadfall, mark, dig and build walkways and trails.
Locust Shade is also home to many camps and our Science in the Park program which provides hands on lessons for K-6th grade students based on the Virginia Standards of Learning science curriculum. The program uses our fields, forests, streams and lakes as an outdoor classroom to teach children ages 5-13 about ecosystems. Educators can learn more about the program here.
