For the past 40 years, the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics has provided senior citizens residing in the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, and Falls Church and the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, and Prince William a platform for athletic competition.
During the Tuesday, September 6 meeting, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors recognized the efforts of the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics, or NVSO, and commended their four decades of service.
As a nonprofit organization, the NVSO began providing competitive athletic opportunities to senior members of the region in 1982 after a wave of similar sporting events began to garner popularity across the United States. In the first year of its existence, approximately 200 seniors participated in the NVSO. That number has multiplied in recent years, with an estimated 800 participants registered for this year’s competition.
The 2022 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics will span from September 10 to September 24. Registered participants will compete in more than 70 events ranging from orienteering to basketball to line dancing with onlookers in attendance.
The NVSO has offered adults 50 and older residing in Prince William County and neighboring localities opportunities to engage in competition, build self-confidence and fellowship with their peers through recreational physical activities, competitive athletics and non-physical games.
Aside from its many health benefits, sports have always existed as an excellent environment for emotional wellness and socialization.
The NVSO encapsulates many enjoyable activities that improve mood and enhance the social life of the person involved. People engage in sports and fitness and start communicating with each other. New friends bring a boost to their life.
The commendation recognizing the NVSO expresses the board’s appreciation for the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics for its ongoing support of county residents and senior athletes.
