The spring 2024 season of our Miracle League baseball program kicks off with its first game on Saturday, April 20 at 9 am. All games are scheduled to be played at Dr. Richard Tami Miracle Field at George Hellwig Memorial Park, an accessible, custom-designed, rubberized surface field. Prince William County Parks is proud to participate in the Miracle League baseball program which provides youth and adults ages 5-17, as well as adults 18 years+ who have mental and physical disabilities, the opportunity to play baseball on an adapted field. The unique program removes the barriers that might otherwise keep individuals with disabilities off the baseball field and lets them experience the joy of America’s favorite pastime.
“At the heart of it, the Miracle League is really about support—being able to support these children and their families, and provide opportunities for them to grow and learn, and really to just have fun—that’s what it’s all about,” said Mac Slover, who coordinates the program for sports services, Prince William County Department of Parks and Recreation.
During each game, every player will have the opportunity to play in the field, bat off a batting tee and circle the bases each inning. In the Miracle League, every hit is a homerun and every player scores.
In addition to players, the Miracle League is also looking for volunteers to be “angels in the outfield buddies.” These buddies assist players with hitting, catching, throwing the ball and circling the bases. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a buddy for one or multiple games, please click here for more information and to sign up. All volunteer buddies must register in advance.
“We need up to 15 buddies each game. We are looking for sports teams (youth, adult, schools, leagues, government agencies, businesses, organizations, etc.) to come and volunteer with us this year,” said Slover. “Anyone who wants to volunteer is welcome. It’s a great way to give back to the community.”
Subsequent games for the spring season of the Miracle League will take place on April 27, May 4, 11, 18 and June 1. All games start at 9 am and are scheduled to be played at the Miracle Field at Hellwig. On inclement weather days, games will be moved indoors at Benton Middle School on Hoadly Road. Gloves, bats, soft baseballs/softballs, batting tees and helmets are provided.
If you know of a family member or friend who would like to sign up to play please click here. To volunteer, please register here.
