Historic Preservation is Good for the Community

Historic preservation helps revitalize neighborhoods by fostering local pride and maintaining community character while enhancing livability.

Prince William County honors its heritage by preserving and protecting its history through the restoration of numerous historic sites and educational programming for the public to learn about local history.

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently proclaimed May 2022 as Historic Preservation Month to celebrate the role history plays in everyday life and the contributions dedicated individuals make in helping to preserve the tangible aspects of the heritage that has shaped the community.

Historic preservation contributes to the local economy and the Northern Virginia tourism market with more than 42% of visitors to the region visiting historic sites and museums in 2019.  

The National Trust for Historic Preservation created Historic Preservation Month in 1971 to spotlight preservation efforts around the country and serve as a showcase for local communities to honor their past and help build their futures.

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors established its Historical Commission and its Architectural Review Board in 2005 to advise and assist in efforts to identify, preserve, protect, promote and maintain county historic sites, cultural resources and rich historical heritage.
