History
Through our Office of Historic Preservation we offer camps that give children the opportunity to learn some local history while having fun.
During our Colonial History Summer Camp, which is a four-day camp (June 17-21, 9 am – 4 pm) children ages 8-13 will explore Virginia’s early colonial history and the Blackburn Family, the original owners of Rippon Lodge. Indoor and outdoor activities, crafts, foodways, field trips, and special guests included in this history camp.
Our Farm Life Summer Camp at Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre explores what it was like to live on a farm in the days of oil lamps and live in a small Virginia. Campers ages 8-13 will explore a wide array of hands-on activities connected to Brentsville’s historic buildings including a farmhouse, school, courthouse and jail, and have a series of adventures throughout the week that will introduce them to the ways people have lived in Prince William County from Native Americans to the present day. Camp takes place June 24-28, 9 am – 4 pm.
Our Civil War Summer Camp takes a hands-on approach to studying the American Civil War. Campers, ages 8-13, will learn about the many parts of the life of a Civil War soldier, including drill, camping, cooking, uniforms and equipment, flags, artillery, cavalry, a field trip to local Civil War sites and more. Camp runs from 9 am – 4 pm, July 8-12 and/or August 5-9.
Sports
Do you have a budding archer or a child who wants to perfect their skills? We offer both beginner and intermediate archery camps for children to learn the safe and effective way to handle and shoot recurve and compound bows, while understanding the differences between them. Training provided by National Archery Association certified instructors. All equipment is provided. Camps take place at Silver Lake Regional Park, Veterans Memorial Park and Locust Shade Park. View all archery camps here.
Our Wide World of Sports Camp is back this year at Lake Ridge Park. Lake Ridge Park is filled with trails, creeks, wooded areas and even has its own marina right on the Occoquan Reservoir. Campers will be involved in a variety of activities such as hiking, learning about nature, kayaking on the water and many more outdoor activities. Each week, special activities that relate to the weekly theme will also be added into our camp schedule. Please note that Lake Ridge Park Campers will spend most of their day outdoors, however, we do have access to shelter for inclement weather days. Click here to learn more about this camp.
