Prince William County has 63 school crossing guards who work at 87 crossings in the county to keep children safe on their way to and from school.
In the past school year, crossing guards conducted 28,056 safe crossings allowing students to safely cross the roads roughly one million times.
The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently proclaimed Feb. 8, 2023, as School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Prince William County to recognize those men and women who provide invaluable service to the community.
Crossing guards often work to cover staffing shortages at vacant crossings in addition to their regular assigned areas, all while working under sometimes adversarial, dangerous or hostile conditions in performing their duties.
The county’s professional school crossing guards are all highly-qualified men and women who, by temperament and training, are fully prepared to meet the challenges of protecting county school children while teaching them pedestrian safety.
In the 58-year history of the crossing guards, there have been no deaths or serious injuries of any child at any school crossing.
The board’s proclamation urged county residents to take the time to let school crossing guards, who are at their posts protecting children every school day, know that they are appreciated for helping to make Prince William County a safe place to live, work and play.
