Cooler weather, bright-colored leaves falling from the trees, the smell of pumpkin spice everything, everywhere can only mean one thing—November is officially here! As you begin planning all your fall and holiday activities, we hope you’ll consider some of the programs, events and classes we’re offering throughout November that will allow you to get outside, explore your creative side, learn some history, or try something completely new. Here are 10 things you can do this month with Prince William County Parks and Recreation as your guide!
Take a Fall Harvest Tour of the Haislip-Hall House
Fall is the season of harvest and in the 1850s this meant preparing for the long time ahead with no fresh food. Join us for a special tour at Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre where we will be visiting the Haislip-Hall House to learn more about what went into the preparation of keeping people fed and warm during the cold winter months. How did they celebrate the waning days of plenty? Just as important, try out some activities to stave off the boredom of being stuck inside! Learn Cartooning & Comic Book Writing
Your young artist can learn to become a comic book writer and illustrator in this fun and creative class. Children ages 7-10 will learn a variety of skills—creating characters, writing stories, and creating comics in this class on Tuesday, November 12 (6:30-7:30 pm) at Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center. This is a great introduction to cartooning and perfect for fans of manga, anime, graphic novels and comics. Register here.
Go On a Morning Nature Hike with the Family
Join us on Saturday, November 16, 9-10:30 am, at Nokesville Park for a guided family hike with a naturalist. Learn about the unique ecosystem of the forest and the plants and animals that live there. This program is designed for children to attend with a parent or guardian. Fee is per child. Register here.
Express Yourself through Art
Join us for a fun, creative, and social event! In this adapted art class participants ages 13+ will explore different mediums of art, while addressing physical, cognitive and social skills. Learn about the Algonquian Nation During Native American Heritage Month
Before Europeans came to the area, the Doegs inhabited the local region. In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, join us as we rediscover the Algonquian Nation during this boardwalk tour. The group will meet at the Neabsco Creek Boardwalk Parking Lot on Blackburn Road under the picnic shelter. Leashed pets are welcome to join. Practice Yoga with Live Acoustic Guitar
Set your intention for gratitude and thankfulness with this special Vinyasa Yoga session intended to aid your attention and awareness on the good things you have received from life. Class takes place on Tuesday, November 19, 5:30 pm – 6:25 pm, at Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center and is free for passholders of both Dale City and/or Chinn Aquatics & Fitness Center. $12 drop-in fee for non-members. Set your intention for gratitude and thankfulness with this special sound bath and meditation session intended to aid your attention and awareness on the good things you have received from life. Make Some Holiday Crafts
Introduce your little one (ages 3-5) to the joys of decorating for Thanksgiving, and Christmas/Winter holidays. In this class on Wednesday, November 20, your little one will enjoy making simple crafts with easy-to-follow directions. This program is designed for children to attend with a parent or guardian and takes place at Pat White Center at Ben Lomond. Register today.
Improve Your Pickleball Game
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. Come join us to see what all the dinks are about! Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate player we have a class for you! You will learn all the basic strokes including dinks, volleys, forehands, backhands, and how to serve. You will also learn all the rules and how to keep score. Pickleball paddles and balls are provided. Tennis shoes are required. Choose from level 1, 2 or 3 classes. All class sessions begin November 20. Learn How an Old Time Thanksgiving Meal was Prepared
Join us at Ben Lomond Historic Site on Saturday, November 23, 11 – 3 pm, and learn how to prepare a Thanksgiving meal using techniques and equipment commonly used in the 19th century. From roasting meat and dressing using a reflector oven, to baking bread and desserts, boiling vegetables in cast iron pots, learn how food was prepared in the days when wood fires and Dutch ovens were the normal way to prepare dishes using authentic Victorian recipes.
