Between March and December, the yard waste collection program will resume, thus mandating Prince William County residents and businesses to begin separating organic materials from their regular trash and recycling bins for collection.
Contracted trash and recycling service providers are responsible for yard waste collection, and as such, all leaves and brush must be separated from trash and recyclables. Haulers are required to collect residential or business yard waste in either biodegradable paper bags or containers labeled "Yard Waste." Please note that plastic bags are no longer acceptable for yard waste disposal.
Residents, businesses, apartment managers, and landscapers should organise separate collection of yard waste, leaves, and brush ahead of March to ensure compliance with proper disposal. For those unfamiliar with their hauler's yard waste services, they should contact them so they may provide information regarding collection days, provision of containers, and other account-specific details.
There is no charge to private waste haulers for yard waste delivered to the county's Compost Facility; however, customers may incur a fee for yard waste collection.
Residents can also deliver yard waste to the County Landfill or Compost Facility using paper bags or containers; plastic bags are not accepted. The yard waste that is disposed of at the Compost Facility located at 13000 Hansen Farm Road is repurposed to create a soil amendment product or mulch. Repurposed compost and mulch products are available for purchase at the facility.
The Solid Waste Management Division would like to thank all residents and businesses for doing their part in creating a more sustainable Prince William County. With the support of community members in the county, every bit of yard waste which is diverted from the landfill helps preserve landfill space, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and enables the reutilization of yard waste by other community members.
Yard Waste is any form of organic matter found outside the home, such as leaves, plants, flowers, grass clippings, wood chips, and trimmings from shrubs and trees. Residents can compost yard waste at home or bring it to the Prince William County Landfill or Compost Facility.
