The yard waste collection program in Prince William County will resume in March and continue through December. Curbside yard waste collection, separate from trash and recycling, occurs weekly. Trash and recycling service providers perform yard waste collection. Residents
must place yard waste in biodegradable paper bags or containers labeled “Yard Waste.” Plastic bags can no longer be used for yard waste disposal.
Residents, businesses, apartments, landscapers, etc., must arrange for a separate collection of yard waste, leaves, and brush.
Residents, HOAs, and businesses should contact their trash and recycling hauler for information on yard waste collection days, provision of containers, and other account-specific details. Private waste haulers are not charged for yard waste delivered to the county’s Compost Facility; however, customers may incur a yard waste collection service fee.
Residents may also bring yard waste and brush to the County Landfill, 14811 Dumfries, Manassas, VA, or the Compost Facility, 13000 Hansen Farm Road, Manassas, VA. Yard waste must be in paper bags or containers, not plastic bags.
Separated yard waste is made into a soil amendment product or mulch at the Compost Facility instead of being landfilled. This preserves landfill space, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and provides a beneficial use of yard waste materials. Residents, landscapers, and garden centers can purchase compost and mulch products at the facility.
Since its inception in October 2021, the mandatory yard waste program has gathered more than 22,400 tons of material in Prince Willaim County that was composted or used beneficially and not buried in landfills, potentially creating greenhouse gases.
Guidelines on yard waste preparation and other details on this program, such as Christmas Tree collection in the first two weeks in January, are available at www.pwcva.gov/yardwaste.
