Prince William County received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2021. This marks the 41st consecutive year the county has received this prestigious award.

The report has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.

The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government, its management and contributing staff.

“Recognition from GFOA not only affirms Prince William County’s internal budget process and best practices are effective, but it also validates our efforts to continually and transparently communicate our financial position with the residents of Prince William County,” remarks Chair At-Large Ann Wheeler.

The county is also the recipient of GFOA’s “Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting” for its FY 2021 Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR). The PAFR is designed to meet the needs of a broader audience than that served by traditional financial reporting. This marks the 16th consecutive year Prince William County has received this award.

Staff in the Financial Reporting and Control Division contributed toward the production of the reports submitted to GFOA and the Communications Office provided their expertise in the design of the ACFR and PAFR.

Prince William County government is committed to presenting a comprehensive financial report that helps our Board of County Supervisors and county leadership make informed, data-driven decisions,” comments County Executive Christopher Shorter. “While we as county employees hold ourselves to this high standard, recognition from GFOA further demonstrates our thoroughness and thoughtfulness in presenting these reports.”
