National Adoption Day is Nov. 19, 2022, and the Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently proclaimed Nov. 19 as Adoption Day in Prince William County. The proclamation recognized that all children in need deserve the chance at adoption.
More than 100,000 children across the United States currently live in foster homes while they wait to be adopted. More than 800 foster children in Virginia are waiting to be adopted, and more than 20 children in foster care in Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park are awaiting adoption.
On Saturday, Nov. 19, the 31st District Circuit court will open the courthouse doors to recognize, celebrate and finalize the adoptions of local children. The 19-year tradition in Prince William County will continue this year to honor parents, children and those involved in their cases in the special ceremony.
The county hopes to honor 11 children at the event this year. The children, who range from one to 16 years old, are in different stages of the adoption process. Some of the children have already had a Final Order of Adoption signed in 2022, and some of the adoptions will be finalized on National Adoption Day.
Circuit Court Judge Carroll Weimer will preside over the ceremony, which will include gifts for the children and families, including a beloved Build-A-Bear.
Efforts behind National Adoption Day, which will be observed in courthouses across all 50 states, aim to inspire would-be adoptive parents to offer children the chance to live in stable, nurturing and loving families.
The proclamation also urged all county residents to join efforts to raise awareness of the importance of adoption.
