Prince William Board of County Supervisors Proclaims May as Building Safety Month

The Board of County Supervisors today proclaimed May 2022 as Building Safety Month in Prince William County, joining the International Code Council’s global public awareness campaign that takes place each May. The Board also wishes to acknowledge and express gratitude to County Officials, employees, and all those who ensure our county’s buildings’ safety and uphold our commitment to protect our county’s structures. 

The proclamation affirms the Board’s commitment to Building Safety and this year’s theme “Safety for All: Codes in Action,” focusing on raising public awareness on building safety, disaster prevention and fire prevention that can save lives: by connecting residents and the business community to building safety and fire prevention resources, through timely and equitable access to development services; by reinforcing the need for the adoption of modern, regularly updated building codes, and helping individuals, families, and businesses understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures; and by serving as an important reminder that modern building code adoption and enforcement is essential to keeping our homes, businesses, schools, and places of worship safe. 

Board Chair Ann Wheeler presented the proclamation to Wade A. Hugh, Director, Prince William County Department of Development Services. “Safety for All: Codes in Action is a very important message for Building Safety Month 2022. As our homes have increased in use in all our daily lives, becoming the telework office and family hub for entertainment and outdoor living, there is greater demand to ensure building safety to account for increased capacity and use.” shared Hugh.

First observed in 1980, Building Safety Month raises awareness about critical building safety issues, from structural to fire prevention, plumbing and electrical systems, and energy efficiency. In Prince William County, three Departments are directly involved in the review, permitting, inspection, and enforcement of the building codes that govern building development. They are the Department of Development Services, Building Development Division, the Department of Public Works, Neighborhood Services Division, and Department of Fire and Rescue, Fire Marshal’s Office.
