Poetry and song are storytelling art forms that predate the written word. Today, poetry spans a vast portfolio of genres that encompass, chronicle and challenge the human story throughout the ages.
The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently commended the Poet Laureate Circle, part of the Prince William Arts Council, for highlighting poetry, encouraging community participation in the ancient art form and cultivating local writers and their creative verse.
In poetry, the rhythm, imagery, symbolism and resonance of words speak to the universality of culture and embody the heart and soul of a community.
In its commendation, the board welcomed and encouraged state, regional and local communities that honor practicing poets with the title “Poet Laureate” to promote writing and artistic expression within society.
