Celebrate National Book Lovers Day, Aug. 9 with a visit to Prince William Public Libraries. Books have been a part of human culture since people started carving on stone tablets. The power of books to entertain, educate and change lives is undeniable.
Bibliophiles, or people with a keen interest in books and reading, will know that the first books were printed on vellum, or calf skin, and were bound in wood covered in leather. Libraries first appeared in the Middle Ages. Public libraries often chained books to shelves to thwart would-be book thieves.
Today, people who want ready access to books don’t have to worry about chained books, or even coming into the library. They can use their cell phones, tablets and computers to read books and magazines and even watch tv shows and movies and listen to music through Prince William Public Libraries’ Digital Library, all free of charge. Indeed, modern technology can place entire libraries at readers’ fingertips.
Still, some people like the tactile experience of turning the pages of a book in hand. Some prefer audio and e-books, all of which are available for free with a library card at Prince William Public Libraries.
Visit "Library Events" on pwcva.gov/library to find programs for all ages celebrating reading.
To celebrate National Book Lovers Day even more, host a book club, buy a book from an independent bookstore, reread a favorite book, start a new book, read to a child, visit the library or attend a virtual event.
