Prince William County Parks and Recreation is continuously working to maintain and improve our parks and facilities to better serve the community. From play areas, to fields, trails, picnic areas and more—below is a preview of just a few of the projects happening in 2025.
Catharpin Recreational Park
Catharpin Park is getting some water fun! A splash pad is coming to the park later this year, along with a comfort station and picnic shelter. Construction is expected to begin this summer. Catharpin features a playground, and large baseball and softball complex in Western Prince William County which includes 4 soccer fields, 5 diamond fields (all grass with skinned infields).
Howison Homestead Soccer Complex
Work to expand the soccer complex began last year. The expansion at the soccer complex will add approximately 1,200 square feet to the building to include public restrooms, team lockers rooms, a storage room and large meeting room. Other improvements include ADA accessibility improvements, new sidewalks, two pavilions, bleachers and benches, and an LED scoreboard. The parking lot will also see many improvements like restriping, lighting and asphalt work.
Currently, the concession building walls are up with the roof coming later this year. Approximately 80-85% of concrete work is complete.
Hellwig Memorial Park
In early December, leaders from Prince William County gathered to break ground on the improvements currently being made to two of the soccer fields at George Hellwig Memorial Park—field 8 and field 3. The improvements will consist of upgrading the synthetic turf at field 8, and the conversion of field 3 from grass to synthetic turf. The improvements for field 3 also include the installation of a large underground stormwater management system to meet Prince William County and DEQ stormwater standards as well as new field perimeter concrete walkways, fencing, goals, and behind-goal netting. The improvements are scheduled to be completed in early spring.
Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail - Featherstone Segment
Work to carve out the one-mile segment of trail through the Featherstone Wildlife Refuge is underway. As part of the 20 mile stretch of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail through Prince William County, this trail, consisting of natural surface, wetland boardwalk and two pedestrian bridges, will take visitors into the depths of nature to explore the sights and sounds of a protected area not currently open to the public. The trail will become part of the PHNST which stretches from the mouth of the Potomac River at the Chesapeake Bay to the Allegheny Highlands in Pennsylvania. Currently 20 miles of the PHNST extends through Prince William County. The trail is estimated to be completed and open for use in the late spring.
Veterans Memorial Park
Some of the picnic areas at this popular park are being upgraded this year from tent coverings to permanent pavilion structures.
The park is a great place to spend the day as it has just about everything you can think of for the perfect day outdoors. In addition to picnic pavilions the park has grills, volleyball, basketball courts, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, and restrooms available throughout the park. Veterans Memorial Park is adjacent to the beautiful Marumsco Creek, Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge and Occoquan Bay National Water Reserve.
Ellis Barron Park
Ellis Barron Park in Manassas will see many improvements coming this year including renovation of basketball courts, conversion of tennis courts to fitness and pickleball courts and two futsal-style turf spaces. This work will be completed in two phases and construction is expected to begin in the spring.
