The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recognizes that the county is built upon the lands that were once the home of thousands of indigenous peoples, whom many have forgotten. The board recently proclaimed Monday, Oct. 10, 2022, traditionally known as Columbus Day, as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
In its proclamation, the board recognized the Doeg People who lived in the eastern end of the county and spoke an Algonquian language which named local waterways such as the Chopawamsic, Quantico, Neabsco and Marumsco creeks. Western Prince William County was once the home of the Manhoac people, who spoke a Siouan language.
The board’s proclamation inspires respect for indigenous peoples’ legacy and encourages county residents to commit to higher stewardship and to embrace differences between one another.
Through its proclamation, the board further encouraged the community to celebrate the principles of equity and inclusion, freedom from discrimination, and justice for all who visit, work, and live in Prince William County.
