Board Designates May 1-7 as National Travel and Tourism Week in Prince William County

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently proclaimed May 1-7, 2022, as National Travel and Tourism Week in Prince William County, citing the power of tourism to drive innovation, create jobs, and power the local economy.  

The County has made great strides in elevating its profile as a top tier tourism destination in the Metro D.C. region.  In calendar year 2020, for example, visitors to Prince William County spent $452 million, which supported 4,711 local jobs, making the county the eighth largest tourism economy in the Commonwealth, according to the Virginia Tourism Corporation.  Visitors also paid more than $28 million in local taxes in 2020, which supports essential services and programs that enhance the quality of life for residents.  In Fiscal Year 2021, the Office of Tourism staff generated more than 18,000 overnight stays for sports tourism and group tours. 

Furthermore, the proclamation reminds the community that tourism is more than visitors traveling into the County from the outside.  Residents who travel within the county’s borders also support local businesses, help their neighbors, and play a key role in strengthening the Prince William County community. 

The Prince William County Office of Tourism is a division within the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism with a mission to stimulate a robust economy and create opportunities for residents by inspiring travelers to visit Prince William County.  The agency, which is accredited by Destinations International, is guided by an eight-member Advisory Board, representative of industry sub-sectors, appointed by the Board of County Supervisors.
