These residential communities provide active, older adults with the security and companionship of a community without the hassle of home maintenance. Housing is designed for individuals who can live independently.
2. Independent Living – Single Family Housing
Independent living communities generally offer a full range of planned social activities to their residents. While most of these homes are purchased, some are rental properties.
3. Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRCs)
These communities, sometimes called life care communities, typically have large campuses that include separate housing for those who live very independently, assisted living facilities that offer more support, and nursing homes for those needing skilled nursing care. Residents move from one housing choice to another as their needs change.
4. Assisted Living
A facility that provides a combination of housing and personalized health care in a professionally managed group-setting designed to respond to the individual needs of persons who require assistance with activities of daily living. The facility provides care to residents who cannot live independently, but who do not require 24-hour nursing care.
5. Nursing and Rehabilitation
Nursing Care Centers provide care to individuals who need specialized care on a regular basis but do not need to be hospitalized. Care is administered by nursing professionals under the direction of a physician.
