Prince William County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office Awarded Two Historical Preservation Grants

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. (September 13, 2024) The Prince William County Circuit Court Clerk continues to improve the preservation and accessibility of circuit court records with grant funding.

The Library of Virginia’s Circuit Court Records Preservation (CCRP) program has awarded Prince William County Circuit Court Clerk, Jacqueline Smith, two grants totaling $52,535 for local historical record preservation and storage equipment.

The public can now easily view court historical documents for research, genealogy, artifacts of evidence and general information. Court minute records, a marriage register, land documents, and deed books from colonial times until the mid-1800s have been preserved as facsimiles.

Storage equipment will be installed to help index and classify historical documents and loose-leaf papers while reducing wear and tear on original records. These historical facsimiles and storage options improve the utility of indexed historical material held at the courthouse.

The public can view and photocopy unsealed historical court records dating back to the early 1700s, both in person and online. For more information, visit https://www.pwcva.gov/department/circuit-court/research.
