Prince William Board of County Supervisors Proclaim May is Building Safety Month

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors has proclaimed May is Building Safety Month in Prince William County, joining the International Code Council’s global public awareness campaign that takes place each May.

The proclamation affirms the Board’s commitment to Building Safety and this year’s theme “Mission Possible,” focusing on raising public awareness on building safety, disaster prevention and fire prevention that can save lives by connecting residents and businesses to building safety and fire prevention resources to help them understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures.

Chair-At-Large Deshundra Jefferson presented the proclamation to Ricky O’Connor, Deputy Director, Department of Development Services. “Mission Possible is a very important message for Building Safety Month 2024. Every day, county staff within the Department of Development Services – Building Development Division, Public Works – Neighborhood Services and the Fire Marshal’s Office work hard focusing on building safety issues that impact each of our lives,” shared O’Connor.

All communities need building codes for protection from everyday disasters like fires, weather-related events such as floods, and structural collapse that follows deterioration over time of buildings of all kinds. Model building codes adopted and enforced by well-trained, professional code officials are society’s best way of protecting each other.

First observed in 1980, Building Safety Month raises awareness about critical building safety issues, from structural to fire prevention, plumbing and electrical systems, and energy efficiency. In Prince William County, several Departments are directly involved in the review, permitting, inspection, and enforcement of the building codes that govern building development. They are the Department of Development Services, Building Development Division, the Department of Public Works, Neighborhood Services Division, and the Fire Marshal’s Office.
