In 2006, the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue (VA-15312) was one of the five pilot programs that tested competency-based EMT education. The pilot program resulted in the development of a state approved competency-based EMT program. Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue subsequently adopted the program and adopted TR-90. In 2017, the EMS Advisory Board updated the competencies to the TR-90A. To provide specific relevant training based on the locality, Prince William County's EMS Advisory Committee has adopted the "TR90A+", which adds additional skills to the competency portfolio. These skills were defined as essential to pre-hospital care in Prince William County such as use of a power-load system and applying CPAP in a scenario. The Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue prides itself with being on the cutting edge of EMS education. Graduates of the EMT program are eligible to sit for the National Registry EMT examination to obtain national and state certification. These graduates are exempted from the Virginia Consolidated Testing Site psychomotor exam due to the competency-based portfolio created through the program. Program Goal: The Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue's EMT Program strives to prepare competent entry-level EMTs in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.
