Research

The Circuit Court Public Service Center (Room 305) has a wealth of information. All of the records/documents that are on file are available for public research and copies may be made -- except for adoption, juvenile and sealed records. The Paul B. Ebert Law Library (Room 304)


The Paul B. Ebert Law Library is available to the public and offers legal resources to the public and legal community, including access to public workstations, sample forms and legal research. The library is open Monday - Friday (8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.). 


Research Aids


The following areas were once a part of Prince William:

  • In 1731 Prince William County was formed from Stafford & King George.
  • In 1742 Fairfax was formed from Prince William.
  • In 1757 Loudoun was formed from Fairfax.
  • In 1759 Fauquier was formed from Prince William.

Historic Research

The Historic Document Room has no full-time staff to assist with genealogy research; however, a volunteer comes in a few days a week and may be able to assist you. 

We encourage you to research using our new Historical Online Portal (HOP) for historical research.

  • The Virginia Historical Society has numerous materials helpful to genealogists, such as genealogical notes and charts, family papers, Bible records, county histories and census records.
